The Carousel

The Carousel
The Carousel

© 2011 Nancy Magarill/Kevin Hunter

There’s a crack in the middle of this crazy world
And it’s stuffed with plastic bags, paper dolls empty cans and foil
And it’s growing bigger and stretching out like twisted taffy and caramel
Into a long long long sticky mess that might stop the carousel

Round and round we go
Hold on tight before she blows

There’s a trap at the bottom of the ocean floor
And it’s wedged between the residue of pirate ships and private wars
And it’s dark and dim, lights flickering like a dream tossed on a lucky coin or shell
And there’s a long long long murky rope that might choke the wishing well

Round and round we go
Hold on tight before she blows

Beneath the silver light
The hungry (hopeful) souls pass by
On speckled fireflies
Into the changing skies
And as the seasons turn
The oil and lamplights burn
A thousand lessons learned
But only silence heard

Damn Boy

© Nancy Magarill/Luke Ebbin

Damn Boy
You’re crazy
Your headlights cracked your vinyl’s torn
And all 4 tires, they’re tired and worn
But still somehow you manage to drive on
Damn boy you’re somethin’ else
Ain’t no one gonna take you for a ride

Where ya goin’ to when the road is through?

And you’re so strong but still so weak
One rusted engine shot and blown
Through all the years and all the signs
With every passing mile that’s come and gone
Still somehow you manage to drive on

Where ya goin’ to when the road is through?
Maybe it’s time, maybe it’s time, maybe it’s time to stop and turn back
Maybe it’s time, maybe it’s time to stop, maybe it’s time to stop and turn back now

Where ya goin’ to when the road is through?

I can be clever when I want to
I’ve got a way with words
but this morning I’m humbled here as I tumble through yesterday’s hurt
it’s like the groove has gone so deep
that I can hardly speak
boom

I can re-live every moment
recall every breath
but I admit that I’m almost afraid to give in
afraid of what’s next
just like the crash that fades away
slowly leaving me
boom

and I’m somewhere lost between the feel
and feeling something real
but I’ve never felt so far so far so far behind

I can be clever when I want to
I’ve got a way with words
but this morning I’m humbled here as I stumble through yesterday’s burn
it’s like the groove has gone so deep
that I can hardly speak
boom

Where Are All the Beautiful People?
Where Are All the Beautiful People?

© Nancy Magarill

when I was young I believed that I could be anything
the world was big and it was free and I could dream dreams
now I learn as we grow old the truth is traded bought and sold
and we will do as we are told it’s cold so cold

where are all the beautiful people

now each night I rest my head upon the lies that I have read
i think that maybe we are dead or maybe we’re all afraid
just in case I close my eyes and pray into the fading skies
that maybe one day we will find that there’s a sweeter way
where are all the beautiful people

one day I thought I heard a voice from the past but he rushed away
he left me standing there alone in his trail with my dreams of yesterday
guess he had nothing to say

Love Goes Where Love Goes

Well it was 20 past three and I was goin’ on the 5th night in a row…
I was foolin’ with the blinds when I caught you two boys givin’ it a go,
well it’s not really my style, but I learned something out there in the shadows…
it doesn’t matter what you like ’cause love goes where love goes

Now I’m not one to watch but I admit you both kept me intrigued…
I was touched by your emotions…drawn in like I was solving a mystery…
there was the smallest hint of blue, that covered me out there in the shadows…
and it unveiled the simple truth, that love goes where love goes

the way you hold each other, you touch each other,
you kiss each other and make love to each other,
you prob’ly get mad at each other and cry all night for each other and you blame each other,
forgive each other too…
just like I do

Well, I confess that I’ve been ignorant dressing up in someone else’s heels…
and I’ve stormed and I’ve paraded with all the doors and all the windows sealed…
but you gave me one good lesson last night, while out there in the shadows…
that I’m no judge of what’s wrong and what’s right ’cause love goes where love goes.

| I Am Not a Monster
I Am Not a Monster

© Nancy Magarill

Sometimes I just need to go a little crazy
just gotta act like a stupid girl
gotta stomp my feet throw a hissy fit
Now don’t go makin’ more of it
yeah sometimes I kinda think that I’m invincible
And yeah sometimes i pretend I’m tough and strong
I flip the bird just to get away with it
I don’t even give a shit
But I am not a monster I am only human
I am not a cunt a slut a fuckin bitch
I’m just tryin’ to figure it

Sometimes I think maybe I’m too much for you
And sometimes I think I prob’ly go too far
And sometimes I wanna throw it in toss my hands up
Sometimes I just had enough
And yeah sometimes I wanna force a big reaction
yeah sometimes I wanna mess around all night long
and sometimes I just wanna kick my heels up go nuts
lose any self control
I can be a child or I can be a woman
And I can run wild
Or tackle the whole world full on
Sometimes I let my urges get the best of me
And sometimes i bet my fragile nerves take hold
And sometimes I’m just a pure shot of estrogen
Laced with adrenalin

| The Circus is Back in Town
The Circus is Back in Town

© Nancy Magarill

There we were pitching hope in the back of this haphazard tent.
There was no one around but the two of us partially spent
and out of the car came two hundred more clowns
and the circus is back in town.

And I’d already wasted a twenty on some peanuts, some pretzels and drinks
when I spotted that old fortune teller, she was fast asleep.
And the sign, it was drooping above her in purple and blue.
Almost insulting, so obvious telling us what we both knew.
“This is the last chance to get at the truth, but it’s gonna cost you”.

And we’d each heard incredible stories of miraculous visions and dreams,
so we gathered up all our belongings, quietly.
And we started to make our way over ’cause we secretly wanted to see.

But the clown in the hot pink suspenders was giving a show.
He was juggling a dozen sharp knives, didn’t want us to go.
And he made it quite clear through the cracks of his pancaked smile…
even clowns need attention once in awhile. So we gave him his due.
For a moment or two.
Wasn’t much of a price just to touch one tiny life.

And nobody could’ve predicted the impact of one thankful tear,
not even the three legged triplets, who had disappeared.
And the tightrope below us got tighter and the net started slipping away.

There we were pitching hope in the back of this haphazard tent.
There was no one around but the two of us partially spent
and out of the blue came this beautiful clown and the circus is back in town.

I wanna wake up
I wanna open my eyes
see that you’re lyin’ here beside me all night
I want it real, I wanna be together
just like they said it’s supposed to be
you and me
forever

I wanna wake up
every once in awhile
2 or 3 in the morning with the lights of the city goin’ down
I wanna feel every inch every part of you
and I want it to last all night
just like it used to

and I think it’s gonna be alright
this dreamin’
Once I fold myself into the sky
and start believin’
believin"

I wanna wake up
I wanna open my eyes
see that you’re lyin’ here beside me all night
I want it real, I wanna be together
just like they said it’s supposed to be
you and me

what are we made of?
Some times I wonder
is it flesh and bones or glass

and why aren’t we breathing?
why can’t we touch
is it smoke and mirrors or just too much?

a stone would break us down
a cut would crack through this facade
a blade would cut a figure 8 and we’d shatter to the ground

a stone would break us down
a cut would crack through this facade
a blade would cut a figure 8 and we’d shatter to the ground

what are we made of?
Some times I wonder

| What Would We Do if the World Stopped
What Would We Do if the World Stopped

words and music: Nancy Magarill
based on Ministry’s Psalm 69

I’m not afraid to love, I’ve got enough to waste
I’m not even afraid to let you know, I just hope that I’m not too late
yesterday you were my lover, today my enemy
tomorrow is too far away to imagine what more it might be

What would we do if the world stopped?
What would we do if the world stopped now?
(I feel like my heart is being touched)

I’m not afraid to fail and I can’t wait to fly
but I wanna know who I’m standin or fightin’ or landin’ beside
last night you were a stranger, tonight a memory
and maybe tomorrow we’ll find our way back to what’s left of the dream

(Give a little love)
What would we do if the world stopped? now?
What would we do if the world stopped now?

I feel, I feel, I feel, like my heart is being touched

I’m not afraid to love, I’ve got enough to waste
I’m not even afraid to let you know, I just hope that I’m not too late

What would we do if the world stopped? now?

The Unborn Children
The Unborn Children

music: Nancy Magarill/Daniel Mintseris
poem by Spalding Gray with permission of Kathie Russo

I have children in me
unborn children
in my eyes and in my thighs
i feel them in my hips
these unborn children in my hips
these unborn children in my hips

I have children in me
playing hide and seek in my hips
they come out to you through my eyes
they don’t find it impossible to love through my eyes
they don’t find it impossible to love through my eyes

Letting them out, the unborn children in glass shells, glass splinters
to all the places in earth splinters
in hesitation to be born, hesitation

I have children in me
unborn children Eyes stop the world
in my hips they hesitate
and play hide and seek
(these unborn children)
my sun sets in my groin
glass heat

I got a weakness that I don’t wanna reveal
I wanna hold you so tight and keep it real
And so I rock myself to sleep as I drift into the gray
That way I’ll never, ever wreck you
losing myself along the way

I wanna be your dirty old man

And so I whisper, so that you’ll never hear
See if I give it all up now, you’re gonna disappear
Don’t wanna crush this pure thing, into a slow decay
Drying out, then dying, killing you along the way

I wanna be your dirty old man

Standing in your doorway, I wanna watch you undress
Alone in your room with the door just barely cracked
And then I’ll hang in the shadows as you turn off the light

Stand over your bed and watch you all night

And I though I might just go out of my mind denying myself
I know that I have to let this go,
and never let you know (never let you know)
That you’re so beautiful, so divine
Boy you’re so beautiful, you’re so divine

words and music: Nancy Magarill/Mikiodo

It’s a crazy world
& It’s swirlin’ down
Thru a tiny hole at the bottom
where dinner and hope funnel through.

It’s a wicked ride on the pony express
Jumping onto the cracked painted plastic cliches
Going right – going left

Everybody count
Close your eyes and go to sleep
Everybody count sheep

There are diff’rent ways
You can spin a tale
You can roll it around in your mouth
Turn pure shit into strawberry jam

It’s a freaky, freaky thing
When you jump on a hint
And you know deep inside that this dangerous ride that you’re on
just doesn’t feel right.

Everybody count
Close your eyes and go to sleep
Everybody count sheep

you left your mark on me
like I’d been branded
now it’s your memory
that’s left me stranded
I’ll wait for you
just like you planned it
I’ll wait for you
til I can’t stand it

We’ll hope
and
we’ll try
and
we’ll fall
and
we’ll fly
and
we’ll laugh
and
we’ll cry
and
we’ll live
then
we’ll die

words, tossed in the air
delicate angels, artful provacateurs
one day we’ll look back at the things we’ve said
and maybe we’ll lay in this unmade bed

traces of matter that might land
another existence that might have been

thoughts, fractured and broken
mysterious agents, concealing emotion
one day we’ll reflect on these crazy dreams
and welcome what’s left of our needs
traces of matter that might land
another existence that might have been

chemise plaid jeans fatigué
il traque les infideles a 16h30
par dessus les montagnes de polyester
dans un désert désoléee
il galope
il a des troubles dans sa tête
comme s’il regardait combattre
les Grosseille et les Duqesnay
juste avant une attaque
Bang, bang, shoot ’em up, il décharge
il y a un cowboy dans l’Eurostar
Bang, bang, planquez vous dans les placards
il y a un cowboy dans l’Eurostar
A 10 h15 le train s’arréte,
bloqué au passage àa niveau
on s’inquiete
Bang, bang, shoot ’em up, il décharge

Bang, bang, shoot ’em up, il décharge
il y a un cowboy dans l’Eurostar
Bang, bang, planquez vous dans les placards
il y a un cowboy dans l’Eurostar

he smiles, it’s what he does best
he’s the clown in the bulletproof vest
makes a joke of us, then we do the rest
he’s the clown in the bulletproof vest
and nothin’ we say, nothin’ we do
will ever change his well oiled attitude
he laughs, as he lies through his teeth
he’s the clown in the black limousine
he’s a spoon-fed son-of-a-Bush
one more ivy league thief
he’s the clown in the black limousine
and nothin’ we say, no, nothin’ we do
will ever change the obvious lack of his aptitude
and nothin’ we say, no, nothin’ we do
will ever change the fact that this land that is your land
IS ALSO MINE TOO!!!!
So F*ck you George Bush,
you and the hawks you rode in on.
He smiles, it’s what he does best
he’s the clown in the bulletproof vest.

Nothin’ you can see, nothin’ you can hold
nothin’ you can touch it’s invisible
nothin’ you can waste, nothin’ you can sell
nothin’ you can taste, it’s invisible

I thought I had you, between the lipstick and the paint
in every line, and every morning I’d erased
somehow you slipped in between the linen and the bed
I thought I’d found you somehow I lost you instead

Nothin’ you can see, nothin’ you can hold
nothin’ you can touch it’s invisible
nothin’ you can waste, nothin’ you can sell
nothin’ you can taste, it’s invisible

I thought I saw you in the 32nd frame
beneath the blinding flash
before the camera pulled away
thought you were laughing
you had fin’lly settled in
I thought I’d found you
somehow I lost you instead

Nothin’ you can see, nothin’ you can hold

1,000 faces just like mine all going somewhere someday
I wish I knew each one by name so I could remember the little things
I wanna reach out but I keep it in
one more long slow ride under the lid

waiting here on the line another day older
1,000 strangers marking time 1,000 good soldiers
I wish I knew each one by touch so I could remember what each one does
I wanna reach out but I keep it in
one more long slow ride under the lid Down below the Rodeo

music: Nancy Magarill/Dave Eggar

I opened the window and sat with my eyes closed
the wind blew the curtains and in fell the rain
I reached for a bucket to catch every drop but they
danced through my fingers onto the parquet

I slipped off my sandals and dipped my left toe
slid out of my robe and my silk camisole
then slowly descended into the unknown and it
felt like the ocean had swallowed me whole.

And I’m in completely now
one thousand feet down
and it’s dark and beautiful
not a soul around
and a blue whale’s watching
from his big left eye
with a quiet confidence
he glides.

I opened the window and sat with my eyes closed
the wind blew the curtains and in fell the rain

faith i know and love i’ll fight for
but hope, i swallow hard like a drug some die each night for
it all comes down to you.
time, we’ve all wasted and the fear of losing more’s begun to grow
but it’s you that stirs my craving
it’s the hunger that follows me wherever i go
it all comes down to you.
and your eyes, they’re breathing me
stealing nights and feeding dreams
Fate, i’ll own and truth, i’ll pray heavy and hold for
‘cause you dig right through my skin
like a dark and haunting ghosts some would trade their souls for
it all comes down to you

words and music: Nancy Magarill

You caught me stone cold deep in the dead of breakfast
In your blue silk pajamas and your checkered robe
I was half asleep diggin the crust from the corners
Sippin my way to the rodeo
I was hangin on the edge of a very strange dream
Where it all was just about to make sense to meDancin with the ghosts…
dancin with the ghosts
At the border

There was an angel there dryin his wings on the carpet
He’d been flyin fast and so he’d fallen hard
He made a big red mess, drippin the dye from his fabric
Runnin’ straight from the arrow of his tatooed heart
I was hangin on the cusp of his every word
And I was just about to get what I deserve
Dancin with the ghosts

And I knew there was nothin to it
But your kiss blew a hole right through it
And then you spoke
And I awoke

You took a quick fast forward on the brink of madness
With your clean cut promises and second chance
I was 1/2 awake, pullin the pride from my pockets
Buyin my way to another dance
I was crawlin’ to the edge of the finish line
And I was fin’lly gonna get what’s really mine

some days i think yes
and some days i think
no and sometimes i forget
the things iÁve always known
and some words seem much bigger
than whatÁs printed on the page
and some souls theyÁre much thinner
than the picture they portray
and sometimes i love red, love yellow, brownish black and blue,
yeah sometimes i love everything
but this morning i hate you.

sometimes i like big,
but sometimes big’s too much
and sometimes i just need
and some nights that’s enough
and someone somewhere told me once
somethinÁs got to give
and sometimes i swear i’d give up
but i donÁt know where up is
and sometimes i like elvis, sheryl, prince, the clash and lou,
yeah, sometimes i love everyone
but this morning i hate you.

i swear it’s true,
i hate your brown green eyes,
your fabulous tattoo,
the long and sexy nights,
the funky way you dress
and how you light the room,
but what i hate the best’s
that I’m still missin’ you.

some things i just take,
some things i can’t and don’t
and sometimes i can fake it
but mostly i won’t
and sometimes i just need to get a grip or cop a feel
and sometimes i just need to hold on tight to something real
yeah, sometimes i even love wakinÁ up alone on a picture perfect sunday afternoon,
yeah, sometimes i love everything
but this morning i hate you.

Girl on Top of the World

words and music: Nancy Magarill

I’m a girl on top of the world in my blue satin dress
spinning around on my toes into an arabesque,
wind me up gently and we’ll do each movement together.
if you dip me in gold then i’ll be your tomorrow forever.

i’m a bird in a beautiful cage, perched on a swing.
i could be happy all day just whistlin’.
hang me up high from your beam and i’ll catch the sun,
but dare me and i’ll spread my wings and probably run.

‘cause the wind only takes you as far as you’re willing to travel
and the higher the wall and the wire, the harder the climb.
so it’s got to be worth all it’s weight in the heart that you carry.
across the line

i’m a girl on top of the world, spinning my fate.
the candle, the wick and the fire and all they illuminate.
offer a sip of your wine and i’ll drink your soul,
but deny me a piece of your bread and i’ll swallow you whole.

but the wind only takes you as far as you’re willing to travel
and the higher the wall and the wire, the harder the climb.
So it’s got to be worth all it’s weight in the heart that you carry

across the line.
